On your-nicked-me-old-beauty Top Gear, the presenters joined those moustachioed boys in blue and became traffic policemen for the day. Jeremy discovered that the guys at Ferrari still know how to let their immaculately groomed hair down. And, James introduced the newest member of the team - Top Gear Stunt Man.

In our first challenge of the new series, the presenters were sent out to buy their own cut-price cop cars, armed with nothing more than £1,000 each and a deep love of Cagney and Lacey.

Jeremy turned up with an ageing Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo which had 'catastrophic engine failure' written all over it. James arrived moments later in several tonnes of Lexus with 'slow but dependable' practically etched on the bonnet. Finally, Richard rolled up in a mind-blowingly camp Suzuki that had 'Vitara' written all over it. No, really, it did - in huge pink letters.

The chaps were sent away again to turn their cars into high-speed police pursuit vehicles. This involved several tins of paint, some comedy sirens and, in the case of Jeremy's Fiat, some Boadicea-style wheel-mounted scythes.

After several challenges involving trying to catch a joy-riding Stig and clearing up a motorway pile-up, two things became clear. These things are best left to the professionals, and never, ever take second-hand car-buying tips from our presenters.

No one is denying the latest crop of cars from Ferrari are utterly brilliant, but we can't help but feeling they're also a bit, well, nerdy. It seems that, in the process of injecting them with all that F1-derived electronic wizardry, the chaps at Maranello have forgotten to make their cars fun. Fortunately, the same can't be said of the new F430 Scuderia. In Clarkson's own words: 'It's like driving a proper Ferrari again.'

From now on, if there's a gorge to be jumped or somebody needs to be set on fire, we'll be turning to our new team member - Top Gear Stunt Man. If you've seen a car crashing through a shop window in an 80's drama series, you can be pretty sure it was him driving. But, fortunately for us, he's fallen on hard times and has now signed a binding contract with Top Gear, which means he has to do more or less anything we say.

So, this week you were treated to the sight of an Austin Allegro being driven off a massive ramp - in reverse. Excellent.

Stay tuned for more from Top Gear Stunt Man.

Don't forget you can now watch this entire episode again on iPlayer. And you thought you were going to get some work done today.
